SYMBiHOM LLC Uses Small Change Crowdfunding Platform To Raise Capital For Scaling of Kits Enabling Conversions of Garages into ADUs
Female-Led Company Seeks to Expand Affordable Housing Options in Bay Area
SAN JOSE, Calif. – September 7, 2022 – SYMBiHOM LLC, a female-led company designated by the California Housing Finance Agency as a preferred provider of ADUs (accessory dwelling units) statewide, is raising capital through SmallChange.co, a mission-driven crowdfunding platform for real estate development, to scale the production of its SYMBiHOM Garage conversion kits. The kits allow homeowners to quickly convert their garages into modular, prefabricated, and approved ADUs.
According to Rebecca Moller, SYMBiHOM’s founder and CEO, the company’s mission is to increase workforce rental housing and homeowner income, facilitate aging in place, and provide multi-generational living at low cost. The company’s campaign on SmallChange.co follows Moller’s design and development of the conversion prototype, implementation of incentives, and establishment of numerous partnerships with manufacturers and contractors. To date, a studio conversion has been completed in San Jose and a one-bedroom is under construction in Burlingame, with more conversions expected to begin soon. SYMBiHOM plans to scale up from 80 conversion kits sold in 2022 to 4,000 by 2026.
As a woman-owned business focused on helping to solve the housing crisis, SYMBiHOM met the criteria of the Small Change Index™, which rates developers and developments according to social impact and assesses their commitment to environmental, social and governance (ESG) principles.
“In 2021 the State of California established new incentives and funding channels to promote the creation of ADUs for renters with low or moderate incomes,” says Eve Picker, founder and CEO of SmallChange.co. “I applaud this legislation: It enables companies like SYMBiHOM to help alleviate the state’s housing challenges.” Investment minimums start at $1,000 and anyone 18 or older can invest.
